37th EAMSA annual conference at Vietnam

Governance and Management of Global Value Chains in Turbulent Times: The Euro-Asia Context

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
26-28th November 2020
Deadline: 14th August 2020
University of Economics and Law (UEL), Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City

Conference Theme:
The world economy has never been better connected than today and the global value chain has been a popular strategy for all kinds of businesses from small startups to public corporations. The international nature of the global value chain makes it vulnerable to regional and global political developments, and the impacts may be felt by all stakeholders along the chain. The world in 2019 and early 2020 has experienced a dramatic time with turbulence from east to west, including the Sino-US trade war, massive conflicts between Japan and Korea, deteriorating relations between mainland China and Hong Kong and Taiwan, the Brexit, and most recently the pandemic of novel corona virus spreading globally. On top of it is business disturbance and a global trend towards industrial decoupling and re-shoring of value chains, the whole notion of the "global value chain" is a risk.

Call for Papers:
We cordially invite researchers in the areas of international business, organization studies, and management to explore contemporary issues in the theory and practice of global value chains (GVC) across and within Europe and Asia. The 37th annual EAMSA Conference is hosted by the University of Economics and Law at Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City, located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Authors are encouraged to submit theoretical, conceptual and empirical papers that draw on qualitative, quantitative, mixed and case study approaches to explore, evaluate, critique and debate issues arising from the conference theme and, in particular, ideas surrounding the theme of global value chains in turbulent time, especially in Europe and Asia context. However, we also welcome paper submissions in the broader fields of international business, economics, management and area studies that fall outside the main conference theme but deal with issues of international business in Europe and Asia, and business and management interactions within and between the two regions. Thus, we invite submissions that make a contribution to business, area studies, economics and management literatures with special focus on how global value chains adapt, develop and transform in the turbulent time in both continents.

Potential topics include, but are not limited, to:
• New appearance of global value chains (GVCs) in the disruptive Fourth Industrial Revolution in Europe and Asia: Governance, structure, and operations
• The impact of political turmoil in Europe and Asia on GVCs
• GVCs and connections of European and Asian economies
• Equality in GVCs in Europe and Asia (gender, decent work, etc.)
• Comparison of GVCs’ contribution to economic development between European and Asian countries
• Start-ups and GVCs in Europe and Asia
• Interaction and integration of GVCs and corporate strategies
• GVCs’ role in corporate governance diversion and convergence in Europe and Asia

Paper Submission:
EAMSA conferences have three tracks: the competitive track, the workshop track, and the PhD track. The most developed and polished papers should be submitted to the competitive track, whereas papers on work-in-progress should be considered for the workshop track. The PhD track is reserved for work submitted by doctoral students. However, conference organizers may consider mixing these types of papers in the program if the thematic coherence for each session is of primary concern. Papers should generally follow the Asian Business & Management journal guidelines. The length of papers should not exceed 8.000 words (including references and exhibits) for competitive track submissions and 6.000 words for workshop and PhD track submissions.
EAMSA is committed to promoting excellence in young researchers. To facilitate doctoral researchers’ participation in its annual conference, EAMSA will provide financial support (of €100) towards the conference fee for up to ten PhD submissions (the corresponding author must be a PhD candidate) to any of the three tracks (competitive/interactive/PhD). A panel of experts will select the doctoral submissions worthy of the award, based on the quality and contribution to knowledge of relevance to Euro-Asia management issues. Doctoral students who have been selected for the award will be notified by late September 2020.
All competitive papers will be sent for double-blind review to two reviewers. Interactive and PhD papers will be evaluated by one reviewer. The evaluation of papers will be based on relevance to the conference theme and to international business and management issues in Europe and Asia, analytical rigor, methods applied, originality, and contributions to the area.
Paper submission is managed by Easy Chair.

All accepted papers are made available to EAMSA members and conference participants in full length via upload to the password protected section of the EAMSA Website. The paper upload at the EAMSA Website should be finalized at least two weeks before the conference.
EAMSA seeks post conference publications of selected papers in two journals it is collaborating with. First, conference organizers select around five high potential papers for possible publication in a Special Issue of Asian Business & Management (ABM), of which the conference organizers become guest editors. They first should confirm with the ABM Editor-in-Chief whether these papers can, in principle, be considered for publication in the journal, and with the authors of the papers whether they are in interested in publishing in the ABM Special Issue. Thereafter, authors are invited to submit their papers for a subsequent double-blind peer review process. Second, the Editor of the European Journal of East Asian Studies will select individual papers from the conference (except those selected for ABM) and invite authors to submit their work to EJEAS.
