Invitation and Call for papers
27th EAMSA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2010
Internationalization of Services: Opportunities for Europe and Asia
IMI
Delhi, India
10-13 November 2010
The Euro-Asia Management Studies Association (EAMSA) will hold its 27th Annual Conference from Wednesday 10th to Saturday 13th November 2010 at the International Management Institute (IMI), Delhi, India. Although we very much welcome papers on mainstream international business and managerial issues, the special theme for this 27th conference will be Internationalization of Services: Opportunities for Europe and Asia. The service sector is becoming a huge driver of GDP growth in a number of Asian economies, particularly India. The growth of the service sector is not limited to catering to the domestic market of the service production firms but is increasingly being driven by exports to international markets. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and its variants have grown by leaps and bounds adding value to the firms producing services as well as firms buying these services. BPO started with low value added services like call centers for customer support but have over the years graduated to much higher value added services in knowledge intensive business processes leading to the creation of a whole new services outsourcing space called Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO). The knowledge intensive services under the KPO umbrella includes a wide spectrum covering investment research, market research, intellectual property, healthcare, legal, engineering services, etc. The low cost structure and access to large knowledge pool provides an attractive opportunity for setting up service production firms in several Asian economies. European firms are beginning to take advantage of this opportunity by either buying services from these Asian firms or doing FDI in setting up service production firms in Asia. Lower barriers to international activities coupled with technology, knowledge and innovation play a crucial role in exploiting this opportunity for both Europe and Asia. Language skills, knowledge pool availability, cost structure and infrastructure are the prime drivers of location choice. The role of location becomes a key factor for on time, on quality, country specific service delivery. Revenue models of service production firms have undergone changes and innovations over time and have been a source of competitive advantage for these firms. Revenue models started from resource based models, soon graduating to output based models, and more recently a trend of moving towards outcome based models. Different modes of Europe-Asia cross border service delivery are possible. The European and Asian firms could have an arms length relationship as non-exclusive customer and vendor. Another option is long term exclusive contracts between service buyer and producer. A third possible alternative is the European firm desirous of buying services setting up a subsidiary or joint venture service production firm in Asia. We therefore invite participation and call for papers from all members of EAMSA and others interested in the above general theme, to present conference and workshop sessions, and to propose panels on other stimulating themes. EAMSA also wishes to encourage PhD candidates and young scholars to submit papers, which will be presented in special tracks for PhD candidates. All papers will be published in the conference proceedings, to be distributed on an EAMSA USB 'memory stick'. Selected conference papers may also be published in a special issue of Asian Business & Management (SSCI-listed: PalgraveMacmillan).
Participants are invited to submit either competitive paper, workshop papers, panel sessions, or for doctoral students doctoral proposals. Submissions are invited either for the Conference Theme Tracks or on other EAMSA Tracks.
